Well, the Pinkish Panther actually hit his pace in this, the fourth in the serial of Pink Panther/Peter Sellers movies.

Distribution rights to the tertiary motion picture in this serial, The Return of the Pink Panther, belong to another visitor, so that movie isn't included in this MGM set of five Pink Panther films. It does exist in a fairly poor Region 1 transfer from Artisan, simply if you must have information technology, wait until it's given a decent (preferably local) remaster.

And then in this MGM set we've skipped from the 2d pic, A Shot in the Dark, to the fourth. And by the time Blake Edwards got around to The Pink Panther Strikes Again, everything was downwards pat. Plot was there, but not important; gags and slapstick ruled. Above all, the genius of Peter Sellers as the hapless Clouseau was given gratuitous rein, in a killer-barrage of inspired routines, and with his accent and inspired mispronounciations finely-tuned.

A Shot in the Nighttime ended with Clouseau's superior, Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) being driven mad by his fule of an underling. Nosotros begin this instalment with Lom escaped from the booby-hatch. His programme is to build a globe-dominating criminal empire which has just ane aim - to kill Inspector (sorry, CHIEF Inspector) Clouseau.

To practice that, he kidnaps a fundamental professor and his daughter, and builds a Doomsday Machine able to destroy whatsoever part of the world he wishes. And he will destroy- unless the world, on his behalf, hunts downwards Clouseau.

Some critics observe that Herbert Lom and his intricate plan is, in this picture, somewhat over-the-height. I differ. This scheme brings the Pink Panther series into James Bond territory, with a great spoof on all those sliding roofs in secret laboratories with strange machines emitting death rays, which can strike down missiles from the sky, or rain decease upon the other side of the world.

Herbert Lom resorts to the sort of full accented villainy the James Bond creators never dreamed of. Such as torturing the Professor's immature daugher by running steel finger-nails down a blackboard. UUGGGGGGHHHHHH. It's not pleasant viewing.

Lookout man for the White Business firm scene where the President and his staff consider the lunatic'southward demands. These scenes strike a spooky annotation today. There couldn't exist people similar these decision-making the fate of the world, could there? Really?

The globe sets out on its quest to kill Clouseau. But each country wants to claim credit. To impale Clouseau, each country send out its assassins, but must dispose of the other assassins start. Clouseau strides down a middle-path while all around him drop.

As one of the assassins, watch for a surprise cameo appearance by a certain uncredited star as the Egyptian assassin. I won't name him - but he plays a totally essential, and enviable, part in developing the strong human relationship which inadvertently grows between Clouseau and the would-exist Russian assassinator, the beautiful Lesley-Ann Down. Information technology's a great affect.

Is this the strongest aspirant in the Pink Panther series? Information technology very possibly is - though depending on the fourth dimension of day or night, the state of your stomach or your heart, it must share that honour with its predecessor, A Shot in the Dark or successor, Revenge of the Pink Panther. A quick tip: don't fast-forrad through the opening credits. They deserve a ten-star award on their own.

  Video

Contract

The quality seen in the previous Pink Panther picture show, A Shot in the Dark, is fully maintained here.

This is a wonderful anamorphic transfer. The iImage is slightly soft, just just enough to make for immensely comfortable viewing, with the print showing very little damage of whatsoever kind, certainly never enough to mar viewing for a second. Colours are well-rendered and shadow detail is fine. There is very little aliasing or other artefacts.

  Audio

Contract

The ersatz Dolby Digital five.1 surround sound, mastered from the original two-aqueduct stereo rails, is strong and powerful, and while this is cipher comparable to true surround sound, information technology'southward a very solid presentation of this relatively vintage fabric, giving it the best audio outing information technology has always had. Mancini'south bang-up music and the dialogue are perfectly represented. Enjoy!

  Extras

Contract

The anamorphic widescreen trailer is well mastered from a relatively worn but reasonably OK print. There are no other actress features - in the box set all major extra features have been put together on a special 6th disc. The merely characteristic of worth to exist institute elsewhere is in director Blake Edwards' sound commentary on the original pic.

  Overall

Contract

Rent this if you've never seen a Pink Panther movie. Otherwise, grit your teeth and showtime putting the dollars together for the consummate set up.
