Editors' Selection: 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan Comfortline 4Motion

Volkswagen's onetime dog yet has a lot of fight left in it

OverviewTiguan brings a GTI-like drive to the compact crossover segment
Pros Willing powertrain, ride/handling, rich interior
Cons Tight cargo infinite, convoluted telephone pairing, antiquated push-push button beginning
Value for money Good
What would I change? Not a lot, minor upgrades to keep it current

After studying the lineup for the Editors' Choice meaty crossover shoot-out, it became obvious that there was a discrepancy in the historic period of the vehicles vying to be picked top choice. Where the Honda CR-Five and Jeep Cherokee are new, the Volkswagen Tiguan is inbound its seventh twelvemonth, and it is doing so as a relatively unchanged ride. This raised the obvious question — would this put information technology at a competitive disadvantage?

Meet the full Editors' Choice story here

The answer is, in a nutshell, no. In fact, its only existent hiccup surfaced in the cargo challenge. VW lists the capacity as 700-litres seats up and i,600L with the lx/xl-split up/folding seats down. This lags many by a big margin — the Hyundai Santa Atomic number 26 is rated at ane,003/2,025L seats upwards/down and Honda CR-V has 1,054/2,025L, respectively. This accounts for Tiguan's mediocre five score in this subject area.

However, it did earn kudos for its rear seat pass-through, which allows four riders and longer items to exist carried inside together, the power to move the rear seat to increase legroom (albeit at the cost of cargo capacity), and, finally, the fold-flat front passenger seat. This characteristic is an often overlooked condom item — folding the seat flat allows a longer item (up to 2.v metres in length) to be carried within the Tiguan with the tailgate airtight. This uncomplicated power banishes carbon monoxide from the motel.

The rest of the interior is a blend of Teutonic functionality and rich materials — this aspect made it one of the more inviting interiors, although the leatherette did dampen the allure a picayune. The highlights were the clean uncluttered instrumentation, the fantabulous long-distance seat support and the power panoramic moonroof. The latter imparted a light and blusterous feel to the cabin. I would exist remiss if I did not mention the eight-speaker Fender audio system from the optional Technology package — information technology delivers wonderful clarity.

Pairing a phone to the Tiguan proved to be more difficult than necessary. Accessing the pairing function is not in the principal centre stack screen where it logically should be, simply in the phone menu found in the screen nestled between the speedometer and tachometer. Once the phone has been paired everything moves over to the main screen. It is not German-similar in its thinking. While I am at information technology, the other oddity was that unlike most vehicles with button-button start I had to button and concur the Tiguan's button until the engine started. Only then could I release it — most like systems require a single touch to creepo things to life.

From this point on, the Tiguan started to show its peers a make clean set of tires every bit it sped alee. In the acceleration and rails challenges it burned past the other eight with remarkable aplomb. The Tiguan's perky 2.0-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine pumps out 200 horsepower and, more chiefly, 207 pound-feet of torque at i,700 rpm, which is 800 rpm lower than the Escape's 1.6L EcoBoost engine. The beauty is the engine holds its peak torque to the point where the horsepower begins to come on line. Equally such, there was no turbo lag off the line and a sustained pull through the mid-range. This showed upwards in the run from rest to 100 kilometres an hour — at 9.18 seconds information technology was the fastest of the bunch.

The slick six-speed manumatic transmission supported the engine's work very nicely. The shifts were lightning fast and the box seemed to take the power to sense that upshifting mid-corner was not a proficient thought. The sport way sharpened things and allowed the driver to pick the shift points according to the tone of the drive. The disappointment was the lack of paddle shifters — given the GTI-like makeup of the drive, they were missed.

Around the Driver Development rail at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park the Tiguan, again, surpassed expectations. First, the fully independent suspension brings an enviable blend of ride comfort and treatment power. A highway jaunt proved it to be a very comfy cruiser, however, toss the Tiguan into a double-noon corner at a rapid rate and it clipped both accurately while delivering reassuring steering feedback (credit the electromechanical setup) and little in the way of understeer. The appearance package and the larger P235/50R18 rubber it adds (along with nicer bi-xenon adaptive headlights and LED daytime running lights) served to up this driver's confidence level.

The handling was as well helped by the Tiguan's optional 4Motion all-wheel-drive organisation. On the track and during the off-route tests it proved to be very fast to react to changing conditions, and it shuttled the power around in a fast and seamless fashion. Information technology also makes good use of VW'southward brake-based electronic locking differential — information technology brakes a spinning bike, which forces the bulldoze to the 1 with grip. It is a well-sorted organization.

The Tiguan's bottom line is simple: It does everything expected of it in typical VW fashion. In other words, y'all get exactly what you expect. While it is entering the twilight phase of its run, information technology still managed to more than than agree its own against some much younger competition. It goes to prove that doing it right the get-go fourth dimension brings the staying ability needed to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving segment.
